Established
in 1973, Chitwan
National Park is the first National Park of Nepal and was granted
the status of World Heritage Site in 1984. It is located in Chitwan District,
covering an area of 932 sq. km.
Chitwan
National Park is covered mostly with Sal trees (about 70%) and Terai-Duar
Savanna & grasslands (20%). There are variety of species of vegetation
found within Chitwan National Park. Some of the tallest grass in the world like
Elephant Grass is found within this area.
Besides
wide range of vegetation, there is also large amount of wildlife, believed to
be about 700 species. Apart from King Cobra & Rock Python, there are 17
other species of Snakes, tortoise and lizards. The Narayani-Rapti river that
forms a boundary in the West & North is perfect habitat for 113 recorded
species of Fish, Mugger & Gharial crocodiles.
There
are about 43 species of mammals, including The Royal Bengal Tiger. Other
mammals include Leopard, Sloth Bear, Otters, Bengal Foxes, Wild Boars, Hog
Deer, Chital, Four Horned Antelopes, different species of monkeys, porcupines
etc. Another popular wildlife inside Chitwan is One Horned Rhino. It is visible
most of the time during the Jungle
Safari inside Chitwan National Park.
Also,
highest number of birds was recorded in this area that any other place in
Nepal. So, it is the perfect place for Bird Watching.

of diversity in flora and fauna and good location, Chitwan National Park is one
of popular destination for nature enthusiast and family holiday tour
in Nepal. Sauraha is well known spot for tourists which is at the edge
of National Park.
